I like to say that your ability to choose the attitude with which you respond to challenging emotions is your golden ticket to freedom. Why? Because it allows you to choose whether to stick with your usual reactions or opt for something new and transformative when you feel disturbing and challenging emotions. 

You may not have considered this ability your superpower before, but when you think about it more deeply, you realize that it definitely is.

This ability gives you true freedom of choice, because you don’t choose freedom – whatever it means to you – in moments when you feel good and everything seems fine. Not in those moments can you truly elevate your “freedom level.” The moment you really have the choice to increase your “freedom level” is when you feel disturbing and challenging emotions being activated within you and you choose to do something different instead of reacting to them. And that’s what this superpower is all about.

Life is unpredictable, and emotions can be a wild ride. But this superpower enables you to navigate life’s uncertainties with intention and purpose. It becomes your secret weapon, an antidote to life’s surprises, and a compass to guide you through the toughest times.

Unfortunately, it’s easy to forget that we have this incredible superpower within us. We get caught up in the busyness of life, swept away by our emotions, and lose sight of our ability to choose our attitude towards them. That’s why regularly reminding ourselves and each other of this superpower is crucial.

 So, how can you harness the power of choosing your attitude towards challenging emotion? Here are a few strategies to get started:

The first step in utilizing this superpower is self-awareness. Take the time to observe your emotions and notice how they affect your attitude and behavior. Are you quick to anger or frustration? By becoming aware of your emotional patterns, you can begin to break free from them.
